Choosing treatment versus sober living
When getting sober we think that the hardest part is the actual stopping the use of a substance, we do not counter in the fact of what are we doing after we get clean? Life as we have known it is never going to be the same if we are serious about our recovery. Most all of us do not have friends that are sober, I mean why would we they were no fun or of importance to us using, they were
Captain buzz kill right?
The places we hung out were probably not the safest either, we cant go hang out in a bar sober to be with our friends that will only lead us back down the " I"ll only have one road" and end up well you know.
So what is our plan after treatment? Most places has special "discharge" planners to help you figure out a place for you to go but they do not factor in the information of what is best for each individual.
The person is merely only worrying about finding an open bed for someone to go to .
If you have never gotten sober before then you need to consider an inpatient program for at least 90 days however 6-12 months would be most beneficial. These places teach us the fundamental core principals and values that we have either over looked or never been taught before.
The number one thing to do is find the rule book and learn what not to do so you are not getting written up and chancing having to transition out.
I would suggest ARC, pathways or salvation army harbor lights.. these places give you the time that you need to work on your self. I know that family, having a job or money are things that we think are most important however it is not , this is a time that you need to take to get better so you can help your family, hold down a job and put money in your bank account...
After you have completed successful program then and only then is it time to consider going into a place with more freedom. No this is not time to go home, you cant go from total lock down to total freedom it needs to be a gradual transition.
However there are those instances that we get transitioned out of those said programs with no where to go. What do we do ? who do we call?
There is a ton of things that you need to ask your self as you are looking over the list of sober living houses, and do not get discouraged or take offense if you are not a good candidate for some of them, that just means you need to keep looking.
keep in mind that your criminal back will have a factor in getting in to some places
what is your length of sobriety? some will not accept anyone under a certain sobriety date, it is much harder to handle people with less to no sobriety. Some places simply are not staffed to handle dealing with the issues that comes along with the little to no clean time.
funding or having the money to get in? most all places are not able to allow people to come without them having the funds to get in the door, this is not because of greed, it actually costs more money then people would anticipate to keep a sober living establishment up and running. You have to be able to pay the fees when you are accepted, if you can not i would suggest reaching out to family , friends, churches before calling any place to try to get this part taking care of so when you talk to someone it is not an issue. You will be surprised how much people pull together to help once you are doing the next right thing.
medication? are you on any form of mind or mood altering substances? this will limit your housing drastically if you are on something like suboxone, when you have the option after detox to not get it prescribed i highly recommend thinking very long about if you really need to be on this medication long term.
Do you have transportation or do you ride the bus? make sure that the place is close to a bus line or walking distance to employment.
I have people call me every day asking me one or all of the above questions, if you are not accepted into a place do not give up, you simply did not meet the criteria that they have to follow, remember the person that you talk to more then likely did not make up the rules they just have to enforce them.

You won't respond to my calls or messages on FB. Can I get a refund of my deposit as I paid for an entire week plus deposit and only stayed 1 night and left the place in perfect condition. Or do I need to go public????
